Special Events Photography Tips
There are two areas that you need to look at when photography any type of event. The photos themselves are obviously important, but the people who attend the event are also important. With that said, let’s look at some simple ideas that can help you grow your events photography business.

1. Artistic Vision – There is something to be said about the way we see the world. Since you are a photographer, we will assume that you have the ability to look at any situation and see how that picture would translate into a digital image. Using that artistic vision is important when you attend events. When you see something that triggers that idea “hey that would make a good photo” shoot it!

2. Always Be Ready – The next thing that is important is to keep in mind is that you should always be ready. If you have one camera setup on a tripod, keep another in your hand. This will ensure that you are always on hand to capture the excitement, that funny moment, or any other situation that will work well for creating a memory.

3. Get the Whole Picture – Too many photographers focus on just the portrait portion of special events photography. When you are out, don’t just make two dozen portrait photos to show who was there. Capture the whole scene. Show a large group of people as they participate in an activity, or do whatever else is needed to create memories. Special events photography isn’t just about showing who was there, it’s also about creating memories.

4. Get in on the Action – As you’re busy capturing the whole picture, be sure to get in on the action. Capture that group of people as they dance, or get the expressions on people’s faces as they engage each other. Ensuring that you capture what is going on, is an easy way to supply your customers with an exceptional group of photos.

5. Everyone is a Potential Client – While you’re working the event, remember that everyone there is a potential client. Keep it professional, and be ready (but not intrusive). That way when your current client does recommend you to someone else, if they attended the event, the referral will remember you as a very professional photographer.

When you work an event, if you take into consideration everything we just covered, then you will be sure to accomplish two things. First you will deliver your clients a set of photos that they will cherish for years to come. But, most importantly, you will be setting yourself up for success through referrals.
