Artistic Photography

The terms artistic photography, art photography, and fine art photography are used often within the world of photos. With such widely used expressions, you would think that there would be a clear definition of what artistic photography really is. However, there isn’t!

To many photographers, or would be photographers, the idea of an art photo is simply any photo that doesn’t fit into other traditional styles. For some any, simply declaring a photo an artistic image is all that is required.

With that there comes a need to attempt to define artistic photography. If we give the term a clearer definition, then we are better able get into artistic photography ourselves.

What is Artistic Photography?
An artistic photo is more than just an image that doesn’t fit within a traditional style of photography. It takes more than just declaring the photo art as well.

The really good artistic photos (those that get published and sold in books to collectors) are those images that were created to full an artistic vision. Of course this leaves the idea of artistic photography quite open, since your vision could really be anything.

In recent years there is a move towards proper set up to fulfill a vision. Lighting, setting, etc, are all planned out to create truly exceptional images.

Types of Artistic Photography
There are many types of art photos. To help get you started, here are a few ideas that may work. It’s really about getting an idea, and then turning it into the perfect fine art photo.

* Artistic Photography with Patterns – Everywhere you look in nature, there are patterns. The leaves of a fern, for example, can create an excellent pattern to make a silhouette.

* Artistic Photography with Buildings – That lone building, in the middle of that rolling field, can make both an excellent focal point for your landscape. It can also make a great artistic photograph.

* Artistic Photography with Still Life – Any type of still life photo can fulfill your artistic vision. Cut flowers, food, simple everyday objects, and more have all made excellent subjects.

* Artistic Photography with Animals – Some may not consider animal photography art, however, it can be. That lone rider on a horse or animal interactions can make art photos. Obviously though, these types of images are very difficult to setup, and thus harder to create as part of your vision.

* Artistic Photography with People – There are photographers that have made a career of artistic photos that include human subjects. Erotic images, historic images, and images that instil deep emotions are just a couple of types that have been sold as art.

When we talk about artistic photography, and try to define it, there really is a fine line between what art is and what it isn’t. Can that excellent landscape image be considered art? Of course it can. We have really only began to cover what fine art photography is.

The reality of it is that if you can picture it, and then turn that vision into an image you are creating art. With that, the only question left to answer is: what’s your vision?
