Childrens Photography

Children can make some of the most delightful photographic subjects. As a general rule they aren’t yet camera shy. As such, childrens photography makes for images where the subject is completely natural and uninhibited.

Natural expression, natural movement, and natural poses are just a few of the benefits of learning to photograph a child. Not to mention, for those who love children, this type of photography is outright fun!

For those daring enough to get into the world of childrens photography, we have put together a few tips. It isn’t that child photos need to be difficult; it’s just that paying attention to the details will help to make you a better child photographer.

Tips for Childrens Photography
When you’re just getting started with childrens photography the hardest part is learning to cope with the fast moving, energetic, subjects themselves. Unlike an adult, children don’t tend to cooperate when asked to pose, and their attention spans are much shorter than that of an older subject.

The best way to photograph children is the natural way:

1. Equipment at Ready – When on a shoot, always have your camera ready. You never know when the perfect moment will arise to capture your young subject. A zoom lens in the 70-200mm range will give you the most versatility for capturing the moment.

2. Lighting Talk – Children tend to look (and act) most natural outdoors. A natural setting can be an excellent place to capture the vigour of youth. Always be sure to watch the lighting, and notice how it will affect the photo. Since you obviously can’t adjust the sun, adjust your positioning to get the right angle for the shot(s).

3. Dealing with Attention Spans – Try getting the children interested in and involved in the shoot. Show them the camera. Show them what it does. Take some junk shots to let them see the photos show up on the view screen. This will both get the child used to the camera, and help them to have fun with the shoot. You’ll find when their interested and familiar with the camera they will be much more receptive to your “look at me and smile” cues.

4. Action Photography – One excellent way to capture children is while they are in action. Children tend to be naturally expressive when they are at play. Give them something to do that interests them, and photograph the moment.

5. Versatility is the Key – The most important part of getting good with childrens photography is to be versatile yourself. Be able to adapt to any situation, allow yourself to enjoy just hanging out with kids, and always have your camera ready. Every child, and every shoot will be different. If you can be versatile enough to adapt you will find success as a child photographer.

If you follow this brief guide, and use these tips when you begin working in the world of childrens photography, it is very likely you’ll find it to be the most enjoyable part of your job. For some photographers, child photography is all that they do, and they have found huge success.
